I cannot say enough great things about the Abbeville Institute’s 1609 Project https://www.abbevilleinstitute.org/1607-project/ and accompanying documentary film Virginia First. When I taught U.S. History, I was the only K-12 social studies teacher that taught the Civil War from its origins with two distinct cultures represented by the group that founded the Jamesburg Colony vs the Puritans in New England. The research and history via Abbeville’s excellent work certainly would have made my work teaching this critical history much easier.

Both the book and the film are college level. Looking forward it is vital that the major points be put into a curriculum that is age and grade appropriate. That will be a critical step and will help to convince state curriculum developers and local schools to incorporate “Virginia First into their social studies K-12 curriculum and standards.
